Making an Impact … CYT-Spokane’s HYPE

“HYPE” stands for High School Youth Pursuing Excellence, and it is a program to help develop the next generation of young leaders. For almost 5 years, this program has been in place here at CYT-Spokane, and the way it helps our young people to grow and flourish is simply amazing.

This year, we have 14 enthusiastic high schoolers who are committed to pursuing excellence and serving this organization that they love so much. Over the summer, most of them were able to attend the CYT National Leadership Training Conference held in Couer d’Alene, ID, and it stirred a fire in their hearts to continue building their leadership skills and reaching out to those around them. One HYPE member said, “That will be a week I will never forget. God has blessed us so much – I can’t thank Him enough!” Truly these teenagers are eager to “do hard things” (which was emphasized that week) and reach new heights of leadership.

HYPE has been eagerly pursuing these goals this year in a number of different ways: putting together a “Guys’ Night In” for the junior/senior-high aged guys of CYT; running the Corner Cafe to raise money for our Compassion child, Emmanuel Sackey; and planning a Valentine’s Party in February. In all of these things, it’s encouraging to see the students not just “completing items on a checklist” but truly seeking to love and serve those in CYT.

In fact, that’s what one of HYPE’s goals is for this year, as laid forth by HYPE Adviser, Lydia Kinne – to build relationships among the families of CYT, and learn to love others’ souls. No matter what they are doing – whether putting on a bake sale or DVD premiere party; hosting Super Saturday breakfasts or cleaning the CYT Studio – their ultimate goal is to honor the Lord Jesus through loving others around them.
